About this Blog

The Curmudgeon's Office blog is a spin off from my personal blog, Too Young To Be A Curmudgeon, which is full of random rants and thoughts I have on a whole host of topics. In an effort to be more organized, and also to attract a specific niche of followers, I decided to start a separate blog for my professional postings. At this blog, I'll post my tips, rants, and random thoughts on a host of professional topics from setting up a home office & office gadgets to 5S practices & time management.

Recommended Office Gear

Below is a list of products I use regularly and would highly recommend for your home office.

Apple Smart Case for iPad

Not only I can no longer live without my iPad, I can not get by without the Smart Case. The case attaches by magnets for easy on and off. When it closes it turns the tablet off. There's no bulk, but it protects the screen when you are not using it. And when you are using the tablet, the cover can flip around flush to lay flat, or it can be positioned to hold the tablet up for viewing.

Evernote

Evernote is a free note taking and data management app for your devices. They have a premium version too. I use this daily for home, work, school and my home business. I have it installed on all computers, my tablet and phone. Evernote it cloud based; so when I take meeting notes on my tablet, I have them on both my home and work computers without manually synchronizing devices. Not only is this great for notes, but for storing PDF files, pictures, office documents and a host of other files.

Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse

I can't stand clutter. With limited time to devote to my home business, I need to be has efficient at possible. Not only do the lack of wires on my desk stream line things for a pleasing work environment  it helps keep my work space more functional and adaptable. I can easily move the keyboard and mouse out of the way for a reference book without tangling wires and cables. I can quickly move the laptop around from room to room, or from my office desk to the drafting table for when I need to stand for a while.

I am very particular with my mice. The desktop mouse is a Logitech M510 and the laptop mouse is the Logitech M705. Both are great and function flawlessly. I like the M510 more, only because it fits my hand a little better. I purposely went with two slightly different mice for when I am using both computers at the same time, I know which is which by feel.

Another mouse tip: I set the two side buttons to be the control and shift key.

QuickBooks Pro

Whatever your home business is, QuickBooks Pro is well worth the investment. I wish I went this route years ago. But now that I have it, I even use it for my personal finances as well.

SwissGear PEGASUS 17" Computer Backpack

I have a desk in two different building for my day job, plus an occasional trip to visit a customer or vendor. Between that and having a home office, I keep a portable office with this computer backpack.
